Afghan Hound - Bests of Breed
Taking center stage here is the show-off in the Hound group, the Afghan Hound with Roberta Hall.

As well as being an extrovert the breed is instantly recognisable with their beautiful think silky long coats. The breeds origins lay in the cold mountains of Afghanistan pre-dating most modern breeds, but today’s purebred Afghans likely descend from dogs brough to Britain in the 1920s by King Amanullah of the Afghan Royal family. However the early breed type was established and breed standard written in 1912 when a dog named Zardin arrived in the UK.

The breed have been described as aloof and dignified, as their appearance would suggest. An elegant breed but if he chooses can really move!

First shown on Around the Dog World in 2016.

Pet sitters perform countless jobs for pet parents. You surely know that they can watch your pets for you while you are out of town, but did you know they might also get your mail, water your plants and keep an eye on your home? Many pet sitters are also available for daily pet visits, not just overnight stays. All pet sitters offer different services, and it’s important that you choose the sitter that will be right for you and your pet.

Laura Vorreyer is an entrepreneur who pioneered the dog walking business in Hollywood more than 15 years ago. She has grown her business substantially to include many different dog walking and pet sitting services. And now, she is the author of The Pet Sitter’s Tale. Laura published a book about her experience as a Hollywood pet sitter, and she’s sharing some of these experiences with me in this podcast.

Different Types of Dog Cooling Products: Mats, Beds, Vests, Bandanas, Collars

Need a way to keep your dog clean then please keep reading below as they have some great tips and tricks to keeping your dog clean and looking smart .

Of course if you need a professional dog groomer in Sydney then you can reach out and contact us as well and we will put you in touch with a mobile dog wash or grooming service

The summer is close, and as much as high temperatures affect you, they can affect your pooch even harder. That’s why there are so many products out there that promise to keep your dog cool in the summer. We’ll take a look at some of those cooling dog supplies, their features and try to determine what’s best for your pooch.

Cooling Mats, Pads and Beds

Choosing between a cooling mat, pad or bed won’t make much difference since they are basically the same thing in the way they function and cool your dog. Even the manufacturers themselves often use these terms interchangeably.

While dog cooling mats and pads are almost literally the same thing, cooling beds are usually more comfortable (and more expensive) since they have thicker stuffing, except for elevated dog beds.

Types of Cooling Beds (Mats and Pads)

Elevated beds – This is a unique type of cooling beds designed to be somewhat orthopedic as well, which makes them a good choice for dogs with joint, bone and muscle issues. They are designed in a way that evenly distributes the cool air on all sides of the bed to provide the cooling effect. Typically, there is no cooling gel and they aren’t powered by electricity to emit cooling effects; instead, they simply allow for better ventilation and as the dog rests above ground, it’s easier for them to cool off.

Water-filled – Water-filled cooling dog beds, mats and pads are a very popular option since water is a very effective cooling agent that’s also cheap. These beds simply have to be filled with cool water and they will keep your dog chillier on a summer’s day. Some of them require replacing the water occasionally, others don’t. They are more effective at cooling than elevated beds, but they do have a drawback – these beds can often leak or spill and they are not the best choice for dogs who like to chew on things. They can also grow mildew sometimes.

Gel-filled – Dog cooling beds, mats and pads that are filled with a special cooling gel are mostly activated by pressure as the dog lies down on it, although some of them use phase-changing materials which allow them to stay cool longer. These beds usually take in a dog’s weight and absorb his temperature to cool the dog down. Usually, gel-filled beds are most expensive but also most effective among the three.

When you choose the best cooling bed, mat or pad for your pooch, consider the effectiveness of the cooling process, comfort for the dog and durability.

Cooling Vests/Harnesses

Dog cooling vests use evaporation to keep your pooch cool, similar to the way humans sweat to get rid of excess body heat. Since dog’s don’t sweat, they can’t naturally get rid of their body heat as effectively as we can.

A dog cooling vest contains a specific layer of fabric that absorbs the water, which takes in the dog’s excess body heat. When the water evaporates, the excess heat is also dissipated into the air. Cooling vests are good because they are strategically placed on the dog’s chest, which is one of the areas on a dog’s body where excess heat is collected.

Cooling vests work best in dry air since evaporation occurs faster than in humid air. You can still use them in a humid or other environment, but if you live in the area with dry air, the benefits of a cooling vest will simply be greater.

Cooling vests don’t require any type of power and they are easy to use. You only have to put the vest under some cool or cold water (avoid using ice-cold water) and then put it on your pooch. You can also refrigerate the vest if you plan to go on a long walk, or simply pour more water on the vest if it dries out during the walk.

When you looking to buy the best cooling vest for your dog, you should consider how the cooling vest will fit your pooch. That means choosing the right size and design that will suit the animal’s body type.

Another thing to keep in mind is how long it takes for a vest to dry out when used. Generally, vests aren’t particularly long-lasting and are intended for use only during a walk or quick play in a park. So look for vests that can work for at least 30 minutes, preferably even longer than that. You might also want to look at vests with reflective strips, in case you end up using it in the evening.

Dog Cooling Bandanas and Collars

Dog cooling bandanas and collars basically use the same technique as the cooling vest and cool your pooch through evaporation. Some of them can be filled with ice and cool your pooch as the ice melts down. Because of their placement, they are not as effective as cooling vests, but they still provide some relief. The best option is using the combination of both cooling vest and cooling bandana or collar.

As far as evaporation in cooling dog bandanas and dog collars go, they are just easy to use as cooling vests. Once again, simply soak them in cold or cool water and put them on your pooch. Of course, bandanas and collars will cover your dog’s neck instead of his body and some owners like to use both bandana or collar and a vest at the same time to provide their dogs with maximum comfort.

What’s Best?

Determining what is best will depend on your particular needs. For example, if you need something to keep your pooch cool at home, you should choose a cooling bed, mat or pad – this allows your pup to pick up a spot and cool off when resting. To provide your canine with support and more comfort, choose a cooling bed instead of mats/pads. If you want something you can use outdoors or in a kennel or crate, choose a pad or a mat. Also, mats and pads are a better choice if you need something that is lightweight and portable; and they’re generally cheaper than good quality cooling beds.

Comparing Dog Cooling Products - Mat vs Pad vs Bed vs Vest vs Blanket vs BandanaIf you are looking for something that will keep your dog cool on your walks, then opt for a vest, collar or bandana. You can even mix a collar and a vest together and use a combination of both for maximum benefit. The important thing is only to choose the best available product that will have the most effect and last a long time (or as long as you need it to).

Also, keep in mind that using any of these products by themselves is not enough to keep your dog cool in the summer for a long time. You must also keep your dog hydrated and provide shade for him in hot weather. Another great way to provide your dog relief from summer’s heat is with a dog pool. If you have a backyard, place one in the shade filled with cool water, and this will likely be the absolutely best option for the pup.

Top 7 Best Dog Pool Ramp Brands

Need a way to keep your dog clean then please keep reading below as they have some great tips and tricks to keeping your dog clean and looking smart .

Most dogs love swimming, but depending on the breed, not all of them will have an easy time with it. This is especially true for getting in and out of pools, boats, lakes, etc. When going boating with your pooch, and you expect some swimming action, bringing a dog boat ramp is a great idea, and it’ll make everything easier for both you and your pup.

Similarly, if you own a pool, it’s important that you have a fence around the pool to protect your dog from accidental drowning, but it’s equally important to have a dog pool ramp (or dog water ramp) so your canine can get out of the pool easily should they fall in or get tired while swimming.

Water ramps for dogs aren’t limited to one use; they can always be helpful while boating, in pools, swimming at the dock or going hunting with your dog near lakes. Below in the article, we’re reviewing and taking a more detailed look at a few of our top picks for the best dog pool ramp brands to help you shop for one and pick the right type.

What Makes a Good Dog Pool Ramp?

Quality

The first thing that we looked for when shopping for dog pool ramps is the quality of the ramp itself. Even for very small breeds, you must trust it’ll hold, so it’s important to us that each dog water ramp we picked was made from durable, high-quality material rather than flimsy plastic.

Not only is a flimsy pet ramp more likely to break with use, but it also creates a feeling of instability that – in our experience – makes our dogs reluctant to use the ramp at all. It cannot be shaking, or have give when the dog steps on it.

Lightweight but Sturdy

It is not mandatory for a water ramp to be lightweight unless you plan on using it for boating or regularly taking it in and out of your pool. While it’s not imperative, however, we did consider this when choosing our top dog pool ramp picks and for the most part, you will notice that our ramps are all rather lightweight.

Compact

How compact a water ramp is influences how portable your water ramp is going to be. For example, does the ramp fold in half or telescope out to reach full length to make it easier to load in your car or boat?

How compact a water ramp is also refers to how long the ramp is or how much space it will take up when placed in your pool. It’s important to have a ramp that is long enough to accommodate your dog’s needs, but it’s also important not to have a ramp that is so long that it’s cumbersome and takes up too much room in your pool.

A Non-Slip Surface

Lastly, but most importantly, a dog water ramp for any use should have a non-slip surface. A good non-slip surface will allow your dog to get a good grip on the ramp and climb it into the pool or boat without the risk of slipping. That said, it’s also important that a non-slip surface not be too rough, or you risk damaging your dog’s paw pads.

The 7 Best Dog Pool Ramp Brands

Below are our favorite best dog pool ramps for use not only in your swimming pools, but also on boats, playing at the docks, or most elsewhere near water with your pup.

PetSTEP Original Folding Pet Ramp

The PetSTEP Original Folding Pet Ramp is from a name that we trust (we used their indoor steps for our older Labrador when he could no longer jump on the furniture). We like the quality of PetSTEP products, and their prices always seem to be mid-range, so you feel better about not getting the cheapest product on the market, but you don’t have to splash out a fortune either.

Petstep Original Folding Pet Ramp, Khaki/Beige

  • Unique soft non-slip…
  • Universal non-slip grip fits…
  • Folds in half for easy storage…
  • Advanced composite plastic…
  • Will not rust or corrode and…

Made from composite plastic, we weren’t too sure about just how well this ramp would hold up to big dog use over time, however, it is rated for up to 500lbs. and seems to do quite well with larger breeds. That said, we should clarify that we haven’t tried this with a dog over 80lbs. so if you have a Newfie or St. Bernard, it’s worth testing this ramp out before you buy it just to be sure.

There are plenty of things we love about this water ramp! Firstly, the fact that it doesn’t use that awful sandpaper texture tape is the most exciting feature of this ramp. We hate those rough treaded ramps that tear our dog’s feet to shreds! This ramp has a soft rubbery surface instead and it makes all the difference in your dog being able to grip the ramp. Secondly (and for those of you who don’t get as excited about rubberized walking surfaces), this truly is a multi-functional ramp and anything that saved us money is a plus. We use ours regularly in the pool and in our SUV and have had no problems with it to date.

What didn’t we like about this ramp? Our biggest pet peeve is that the swimming pool extension must be purchased separately. That said, we do like the fact that additional research went into a special pool extension and PetSTEP didn’t expect their product to work flawlessly for multiple applications.

Pros

  • Folds in half for easy storage.
  • Holds up to 500lbs.
  • Soft rubberized surface for grip without abrasion.
  • Easily cleaned.
  • No rust or corrosion.
  • No sharp edges.

Cons

  • You must purchase a “pool extension” to adapt this ramp for pool use. This will cost just under $60 on top of the price of the ramp.
  • The closing clasp to lock the ramp when folded can be weak.
  • Some pet parents had trouble with the rubber coating coming away from the ramp.
  • This is a slightly narrow ramp for big dogs.
  • The ramp can “bounce” if a larger dog runs across it.

Skamper Ramp Super

The Skamper Ramp Super is a ribbed plastic ramp with drainage holes all over the body of the ramp. It’s designed specifically for emergency water escape (such as in a swimming pool). This ramp comes in two sizes – large and regular, although we recommend the larger ramp because even small dogs seem to have trouble with the small ramp not giving them enough length. This is also another mid-range product when it comes to price, but unlike a few of the other products, this one looks a lot flimsier for what you pay.

Made from 8mm, chemical- and UV-resistant, recyclable, box-corrugated, PP (polypropylene), we like the appeal of these ramp features, but we’re not quite sold on how well it will stand up to bigger dogs because it does seem quite flimsy. The other thing that’s important to know is that the ramp uses rope for “docking” which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does make the ramp a little more “free-floating” which can put off some dogs.

We love that Skamper Ramp went for a ramp material that is so pup-friendly and that it won’t yellow in the sun. We also thought that using a white material for the ramp so that it would be visible in the water was a pretty great idea. Lastly, if you have trouble lifting heavier weights, you’ll love that this lightweight ramp can easily be flipped back over the side of the pool and you don’t have to lift it out and pack it away with every use if you don’t want to.

What we didn’t like so much about this ramp, though, was that the regular sized ramp was so small that it was almost nonfunctional. We also weren’t too happy with the anchoring system for this ramp – it just wasn’t sturdy enough to give us confidence let alone make our pups feel comfortable.

Pros

  • Available in multiple sizes.
  • Corrosion resistant.
  • Easily pulled from the water by flipping it over the side of the pool.

Cons

  • No slip-free grip.
  • The extension of the larger ramp can bend downwards under heavier dogs.
  • Some pet parents report the ramp flipping sideways in the water if their dog did not center themselves on the ramp.
  • Too narrow for wider breeds to use comfortably.
  • Many pet parents found the shorter ramp size to be too small to be practical.

Beavertail Aluminum Folding Dog Ladder

The Beavertail Aluminum Folding Dog Ladder is an unusual ladder compared to other dog water ladder options simply because of the shape. Initially designed for use on duck hunting boats, this is a very sturdy ladder that has also been used in swimming pools by simply hooking it on the ladder. It’s probably important to note that this isn’t a water ramp/ladder that’s recommended for swimming pool use by the manufacturer, though, even though it has been used for that purpose.

Beavertail Aluminum Folding Dog Ladder, Olive Drab…

  • This ultra strong two-way…
  • Floods up for easy storage
  • Olive drab color

Made of durable aluminum and stainless steel, this ladder/ramp option also has rubber covered arms to keep it in place and to silence it when you are using it during a duck hunt. Although the unique shape of this ramp might be a bit off-putting if you’re looking for a ramp that’s less bulky, the shape is one of the features that we love most. The unique wave makes it much easier for dogs to climb up and continue climbing without as much strain as a traditional ramp would create on the limbs.

As we mentioned above, we really love the shape of this ladder, but there are a few more features that we love too. The dual point latching system that keeps the ladder sturdily attached to the boat is a huge plus, and the material quality is another bonus. Unlike the plastic versions of these ramps, this option is much more likely to last even with ongoing use.

Unfortunately, in addition to all the things that we love about this ramp, there are also several things that we don’t like so much…but this could be because we aren’t a duck hunting crew? Firstly, we have trouble with the color. Again, this is a ramp largely used for duck hunting, so we understand the need for camouflage, however, the drab color does make it harder to see under the water which is a tough sell if you have seniors.

Our second concern with this ramp option is that it doesn’t offer much purchase for your dog’s feet while walking up the ramp – some pet parents have said that they had to add a towel to the ramp to give their dog a better grip on the surface. We suspect that these are older dogs or dogs that are less steady on their feet, but it’s something to consider.

Pros

  • Designed for boat use, but also works on the side of pools or on pool ladders.
  • Darker, drab color for better duck hunting use.
  • The product design makes it easier to climb than a traditional flat slope.
  • Rubber covers on the arms of the ramp make sure it doesn’t scratch the sides of your boat or bang against your boat or pool side, scaring your dog.
  • Takes up limited space.

Cons

  • Although great for hunting use, the dark olive color of these steps makes them harder to see in murkier river waters.
  • Slightly too narrow for some larger dogs.
  • Some pet parents complain of weak threading on the screws that required them to do some DIY work.
  • The surface of the ladder is too a little too slick for dogs to grip.

Great Day LP500 Pet Platform (Load-A-Pup for Boats)

The Great Day LP500 Pet Platform is another unique water ramp/platform option that was designed for boat use but has been used by multiple pet parents in their home pools with success. We must admit that when we first saw the Great Day platform, we weren’t too sure about the design, but seeing it in action, it actually works really well! Unlike other ramps, this one provides a flat step up like having an “in between” step. Yes, we know, it’s a step not a ramp, but it doesn’t require the climbing that traditional stairs do so we think that it’s more comparable to a ramp in terms of functionality.

The Great Day LP500 is made from light-weight aircraft aluminum and has ridges along the length of the platform for traction – not adhesive tape that will peel away. Despite being lightweight, the platform is incredibly sturdy and fits right on to your boat ladder or pool ladder securely. When it’s not in use, the platform folds up for easy storage or it can be removed completely by removing the easily removed adjustable anchoring straps.

We love quite a bit about this “ramp” option, namely, the unique design that finds a middle-ground between slippery ramps and hard to climb stairs. We also like that this is a very lightweight platform because it looks deceptively heavy when you first see it – in actuality, it weighs just 7lbs. Lastly, the fact that this platform is made from aircraft aluminum is a great peace of mind if you are going to use it frequently or intend to leave it in your pool.

What don’t we love about this ramp/platform choice? Our biggest pet peeve about any product is when so much thought went into the main design, yet so little thought went into the “accessories”. This is exactly what happened with the anchoring straps of this swim platform. While the platform itself is very stable and reliable, the cheaper anchoring straps are easily loosened causing the platform to slowly slide down with regular use.

Pros

  • Easily hooks onto boat or pool ladders.
  • Gripping ridges are built into the platform making it easier to grip without worrying about a grippable surface peeling away.
  • Fits to any boat make or model that has a boarding ladder.
  • The platform is large enough for bigger dogs.
  • Folds flat for storage.
  • Made from aircraft aluminum for durability and strength.

Cons

  • Better suited for boat use than pool use.
  • Some pet parents find that the ladder hangs too low on their boat.
  • The attachment straps aren’t as strong as they should be for such a sturdy ramp.

Dog On Water Ramp

The Dog On Water Ramp is like nothing you’ve ever seen before, yet it is one of the most incredible ideas we have seen for an emergency water exit option. This product is designed with inflatable tubes on each side of the mesh ramp and with a safety platform built at the top of the mesh ramp and the top of the inflatable tubes. The whole point of this ramp option is to have it float for easier access for your pup without the ramp sinking as it gets used, and we really like it!

Made from plastic, “Superman mesh”, and steel, the Dog On Water Ramp looks clumsy and it takes up more room than most other dog water ramps, but this is one of those products that – if you can afford it – you’ll get more than enough use out of it to make your money back. That said, however, it’s not your average family that’s going to spend $400+ on something that they can be (less effectively) remedied with a much cheaper product.

What do we love about this ramp? We can’t overstate just how much we love the concept of using pontoon like floats to keep the ramp afloat. This feature doesn’t just make it much easier for dogs to use it because they can see it above water, but it also helps to counteract the weight of your dog when they step on the ramp by creating less of a “dip” when they step onto it. We also really like the inflatable side pieces (which are puncture proof) because they allow a tired dog to safely rest while still in the water before they attempt to climb out.

What don’t we like about this dog water ramp? Have you seen that price tag?! Of course, you pay for quality and as one of the best ramps on our recommendation list – if you have the money – it’s worth the purchase. The truth is, however, that very few people are going to invest the alternative of a hefty car payment into a product that they can find alternative solutions for at less than a quarter of the price!

Pros

  • Can be used on a boat or in a pool.
  • The fasteners and tubing are stainless and galvanized steel making them sturdier than other ramps we’ve looked at.
  • Features two large floats on each side of the mesh ramp to make your dog feel safer and keep it afloat.
  • Easily stored.
  • Simple to use and requires less “learning time” for dogs than other ramps.

Cons

  • If you want to put the ramp up in storage, you must deflate the bolsters and reflate them when you’re ready to put it in the water again. (Note: an air compressor will make this easier.)
  • Some pet parents have experienced fraying of the mesh material on the ramp, but this seems to be a seldom occurrence.

Paws and Pals Dog Ramp for Large Dogs

The Paws and Pals Dog Ramp for Large Dogs is an affordable dog water ramp that might look simple, but it actually has quite a few incredible features including the ability to use it in the car, SUV, indoor pool, and outdoor pool! Although, you bigger dog parents out there should know that this ramp is only rated for a max capacity of 120lbs.

Made from PVC plastic, this lightweight dog ramp comes with grip tape that can be trimmed to fit your ramp and make it an easier climb for your dog. With that in mind, however, you can use the ramp without the grip tape and find that it works just as well for your dog. When not in use, you can fold this ramp up for easy storage and it even has a carrying handle.

What we love about this dog water ramp is the fact that it has so many applications so that you effectively end up with multiple products in a single ramp! We also like that this ramp is so lightweight that it can be folded away in your vehicle and taken to the lake or a friend’s home for pool day without much fuss at all! Lastly, we also love that this ramp is a little wider than some of the narrower products on the market which prove difficult or even impossible for big dogs to use safely.

What don’t we like about this dog water ramp? Our primary concern is that this ramp can be much too steep of an incline for older dogs or dogs that are unsteady on their feet.

Pros

  • Solid construction that gives your dog more confidence than flimsier ramps.
  • The grip tape is water resistant and can be trimmed to any desired size or shape.
  • Folds up for easy storage and has a handle for transport!
  • Ridged design for easy gripping even without grip tape.
  • Approved for dogs up to 120lbs.
  • Can be used for various situations including cars, pools, and RV’s.

Cons

  • There is no latch at the top of the ramp to secure it in place so it is possible that it will move.
  • Some pet parents have trouble with the folding hinge freezing so the ramp doesn’t fold without a little force (some pet parents say they kick it, but we wouldn’t recommend it!)
  • The grip tape can peel up and rip if not applied properly.
  • The ramp can be a little too steep for older or unsteady dogs depending on the height of your vehicle.

Flightbird Pet Ramp

The Flightbird Pet Ramp is another unique looking pet ramp option, but unlike some of the others, this ramp is priced rather affordably and can be used in various incline positions ranging from a basic ramp to fabric steps. This allows your ramp/steps to be catered specifically to your dog’s needs.

Made from stainless steel and waterproof nylon, this dog water ramp can be used in your car as well on your boat and in your home pool, making it a pretty good investment if you have a dog with limited mobility. The ramp also features rubber feet which keep it from slipping while it is in use. This may sound like a simple feature, but you’d be surprised at just how many water ramps don’t have anything to keep your dog safe from slipping when using them.

What we love most about this ramp/stairs option is that it provides multiple step size choices that can be adjusted to suit your vehicle and your dog’s size or health. This makes it a great option for families with multiple dogs in their household because adjustable settings can accommodate each dog separately – ever tried to shop for products that suit a Great Dane and a chihuahua?

What don’t we like about this dog ramp choice? The fact that the safety buckle that helps to hold the ladder in the right position resembles nothing more than a flimsy carabiner. We’re not sure just how much weight or movement that carabiner can take before it breaks and takes the whole ramp/steps down with it!

Pros

  • Supports up to 100lbs.
  • The accordion design gives better grip and more purchase for older or unsteady dogs.
  • Stores easily because it folds up in a unique way.
  • Has a handle for easy transportation.
  • Can be set to a steep step angle or a shorter step angle depending on the height of your vehicle.
  • Anti-slip rubber feet keep the ladder in place.

Cons

  • Although designed for multiple uses – one of which is pool use – the fabric can be a little slippery.

Considering Dog Pool Steps

In addition to a pool ramp for dogs, there is also the option of utilizing dog water steps. Although dog water steps aren’t ideal for everyone (we don’t recommend them for older dogs or dogs with weak limbs), there are relatively few dog water ramps available and so there is very little variety. If you can’t find a dog water ramp that suits your needs or your budget, consider looking into pool steps for dogs instead.

Our Top Pick Overall

PetSTEP Original Folding Pet RampOf all the dog water ramps we reviewed and listed above, it was difficult to pick between a few brands since many of them serve a similar purpose and are of similarly great quality. Nonetheless, our favorite pick ended up being PetSTEP Original Folding Pet Ramp.

While we didn’t find an overall perfect and best dog pool ramp that left us with no concerns at all, the PetSTEP dog ramp is the best option on the market at the moment with the least disadvantages and most reliable features. It is more expensive than some of the cheaper options, but it is a higher quality product and has fewer points of concern than the most expensive ramp on our list.

We also picked this as the best pool ramp for dogs because it is a multi-use option with an extension specifically meant for use in pools which shows us that research was done into making the ramp safer for use in pool areas where some of the other ramps seem to be a “one size fits all” solution for boats, pools, and dry land.

Once you adopt a pup, spaying or neutering is often high up on the priority list for many pet owners, but not all are familiar with the many reasons why this is recommended by vets and rescue organizations. There is one obvious benefit to spaying and neutering your dogs – helping to reduce the pet overpopulation problem, but did you know that there are a whole host of other benefits too?

What’s Spaying and Neutering?

Most of us understand the concept of spaying and neutering to mean sterilizing our dogs, but it’s important to understand exactly what this means in order to understand some of the health benefits that it delivers.

Spaying. When a female dog is spayed, her uterus and ovaries are removed so that she cannot become pregnant.

In some instances, a dog may have an incomplete ovariohysterectomy (removal of the ovaries and uterus where a portion of the uterus is left behind) or an ovariectomy (removal of only the ovaries where the uterus remains). The incomplete removal of the ovaries can lead to symptoms associated with your dog going into heat. The incomplete removal of or complete failure to remove the uterus can also leave your female dog open to illnesses like pyometra.

Neutering. When a male dog is neutered, his testicles are removed through a de-sex procedure so that he cannot impregnate a female dog. The removal of dog’s gonads is called Castration.

While veterinarians do use both terms neutering and spaying, in most instances only one of them – “neuter” – will be used as a term for removal of reproductive organs of dogs for both sexes. Meaning that colloquially, the term “neutering” applies to both male and female dogs.

14 Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Your Dogs

Spaying and Neutering a Dog

1. You Eliminate the Risk of Certain Types of Cancer

Spaying your female dog drastically cuts her chances of developing breast cancer – a disease with just a 50% survival rate in dogs. Spaying also eliminates the possibility that your female dog will develop uterine, cervical or ovarian cancer.

Similarly, neutering your male dog prevents them from developing testicular cancer.

2. You Reduce the Risk of a Range of Other Diseases Too

Spaying your female dog also eliminates or reduces the risk of them developing pyometra, depending on their age of spay and the spay procedure.

Neutering your male dog also reduces the chances of them developing an enlarged prostate – in fact, if your male dog is neutered before hitting puberty, their prostate gland does not develop. Neutered males also have less of a chance of perianal tumors.

3. The Elimination or Reduction of Marking Behavior

Unneutered dogs often tend to mark their territory with urine as an act of territoriality and dominance – yes, this includes inside the house. In approximately 50-60% of cases, this marking behavior has been eliminated completely by simply getting the dog neutered.

4. You Avoid Dealing with a Female Dog Being in Heat

When people talk about wanting to breed their female dog, they tend to overlook the fact that they will also have to learn how to manage a dog in heat. A female dog in heat is messy, has behavior patterns that are out of the ordinary for them, may often try to escape, and will likely have irregular heat cycles for their first few cycles.

This creates a number of situations for you to deal with from your dog bleeding and spotting to having to Macgyver your home to prevent repeated escape attempts. None of these things are pleasant for you or your dog, and they can all be avoided by having her spayed before her first heat cycle.

And no, there is no reason why you should allow your female dog to go through her first heat cycle or have a litter before spaying her. In fact, spaying your dog before she goes into heat virtually eliminates their lifelong risk of breast cancer (with the risk dropping to less than ½ of 1/10 of 1% (0.05%)), where allowing your dog to go through a single heat cycle before spaying her has a much lesser impact on their breast cancer risk.

5. You Aren’t Fighting to Keep Your Male Dog at Home When Neighborhood Dogs Go into Heat

When a female dog goes into heat, a male dog can smell her for up to three miles away. That means that if a female dog goes into heat within a three-mile radius, your male has a primal drive to seek her out and impregnate her.

Neutering your dog can reduce the testosterone in your male dog’s system, and can eliminate or at least dampen that desperate need to mate so that you’re not having to fight so hard against his hormonal wanderlust.

Keep in mind though that some neutered dogs will still have an interest in a female in heat despite being altered, so it’s always important to encourage spaying of female dogs as well.

6. Neutering Male Dogs Can Reduce Aggression

Although neutering is NOT a solution to aggression in dogs, male canines that are neutered at a young age exhibit less aggressive or dominant behavior than dogs that are not neutered.

This is caused by a lack of the testosterone surge that accompanies male dog maturity. Neutered male dogs are also less prone to fighting with other male dogs as they have a lower drive to compete for mates and establish territory.

7. Altering Your Dog Can Increase Harmony in Multi-Dog Households

If you have more than one dog in your household, neutering your males can reduce conflict with other male dogs by decreasing testosterone levels as I’ve mentioned above. Altering your female dogs has a similar effect by eliminating the mood changes that often accompany a dog’s heat cycle and eliminating the source of frustration for male dogs in the household that occurs when a female is in heat.

8. COSTS!

Many dog owners severely underestimate the cost of having an unaltered do, so let’s take a quick look at just some of the potential expenses involved:

  • Higher boarding fees, license fees, and release fees if your unaltered dog is taken in by animal control.
  • The cost of products and care for a dog in heat.
  • The cost of providing for a pregnant dog and whelping puppies. Not to mention any complications that may arise with the birth or the resulting puppies.
  • Damages caused by an unneutered male dog attempting to get out to access a female in heat, marking your home with urine, or even biting someone else’s dog when asserting their dominance when a female in heat is nearby or when another male is vying for territory.

All of this can be avoided with a spay or neuter surgery that you can provide to your dog through a low-cost or no-cost spay and neuter clinic program.

9. Reduction of the Pet Over-Population Problem

Yes, I’ve already mentioned this point and unless you’re living under a rock, you are well aware of it, but allow us to share a couple of devastating statistics with you to really hammer the point home.

According to the SPCA, 3.3 million dogs enter shelters across the U.S. in a single year. Around 670,000 of those dogs are euthanized each year. Can you still justify adding to the 3.3 million shelter dogs that already need homes in this country alone?

10. Because the “Benefits” of Letting Your Dog Have “Just One Litter” Are a Myth

Many dog owners don’t spay or neuter their dogs because they falsely believe that allowing them to have “just one litter” is beneficial to their health. This is simply not the case. In fact, we’ve already touched on how drastically you reduce your female dog’s chances of developing certain cancers with early spaying.

On top of that, there are also more risks associated with a female dog having a litter of puppies than there are with having her spayed.

11. Because “Neutering and Spaying Will Make Your Dog Fat” Is Also a Myth

Another reason that dog owners give for not spaying or neutering their dog is that they believe altering them will make them “fat”. There is simply no justification for this myth at all. Your dog will become overweight or obese because of inactivity, lack of exercise, poor diet – and not because you have had them altered.

12. Altering Your Pets is a Service to the Community

One benefit that few dog owners realize to having their dog spayed or neutered is the impact that it has on their community. You are not adding to your local pet overpopulation problem and so you are not draining state resources to care for even more homeless dogs. You are also leaving more room in shelter facilities for stray dogs who may otherwise pose a hazard or nuisance to local drivers or pedestrians.

13. An Altered Dog is, Overall, a Happier Dog

It sounds silly but it’s true! Your female dogs are not having to concern themselves with the affections of every male dog in a 3-mile radius when they go into heat and your male dog isn’t constantly focusing on trying to get to every female dog in heat within that same range.

14. More Services Are Available to Your Dog When They’re Altered

It’s not a factor that many dog owners think about, but there are limitations on the types and costs of services that are available to your dog when they are not altered.

For example, boarding kennels often charge higher fees to board dogs that are not altered, daycare programs will not accept dogs that are not altered, training programs also have strict regulations on accepting unaltered dogs into their programs because of the distraction they can cause to other dogs sharing the same classes.

But I Can't

But Why Can’t I…

When sharing the benefits of spaying and neutering with someone who is reluctant to get their pet spayed or neutered, they undoubtedly have something to say. So do we…

Question: But why can’t I let my dog have a litter of puppies if I find them all homes?

A: Because those homes are homes that could provide for homeless dogs already living in shelters and facing euthanasia.

Statement: But I want another dog just like mine!

A: There is much more to your dog than their genetic makeup and you can never replicate your existing dog no matter how hard you try. Also, remember that it takes two dogs to make puppies!

Question: Why is it anyone’s business if I’m caring for my dog and their puppies?

A: Because ultimately, you are still adding to the problem. You are taking homes away from dogs that will be destroyed due to a lack of homes simply by adding to the canine population.

It’s also the business of any dog lover to point out that irresponsible and inexperienced breeding creates unhealthy dogs that often wind up in shelters themselves when they become too costly to care for.
