First Time Grooming For Puppies

GroomerThe holidays have passed and with that, you may have gotten the gift a fluffy new pup! They are at the point in their lives where they can get away with anything they want. This at times also allows for them to get into stinky and sticky situations. So the question for all new or old puppy owners is when do you start grooming? When is the at home bath not enough? Well, the answer is actually pretty simple.

When someone brings home a new puppy the thought of training is one that is pushed to the future. Most people don’t realize that by the time their new little one is 8 weeks, that they can also be started on training right away. This includes, but is not limited to, dog grooming. When started early it can teach a puppy not to be afraid of grooming. Some of the things it helps them get used to are loud sounds, vibrations, & the bath. Even short-haired dogs can benefit from being started at this age. Even though they don’t need haircuts they still have to get used to the grooming process as well.

Bringing in your young friend doesn’t always mean doing the full groom. Usually, a groomer will recommend that you do a puppy trim to help with the adjustment. This will usually consist of:

  • Face, Feet & Fanny Trim

  • Basic Bath

  • Nail Clipping

  • Ear Cleaning

  • 15 Minutes of Brushing

GroomerAll of these things help to introduce the little one to the grooming process in small amounts. This allows your pup to get a feel for grooming without being completely overwhelmed or overstimulated.

Depending on how your pet takes the groom, the groomer may suggest doing this package a few times. Doing this on more nervous animals gives them more time to adjust before full grooms. Even though owners think of the salon as a spa day, they also have to remember that their little friends really have no clue what is going on. This process can make them very nervous and stressed. So patience for the process and the quality of the groom is important. A good groomer would rather take their time introducing the new pet to the process. Forcing the pup through the groom just to make it perfect never has a positive outcome.

At Furtastic Pet Grooming out first priority is the safety and happiness of your pet. The groomers in our shop do their best to make sure your pet’s visit is the best it can be. So when bringing in your new friend for a groom just remember it takes adjusting and time. We always look forward to seeing you your furry friends and are always happy to share information!
