This girl conned her mother into getting a dog and her funny story has gone viral.

Kelsey Johnstone, 21, has been looking to adopt another dog for some time now. She wanted Oliver, her German shepherd rescue, to have a sibling to play with.

But Kelsey couldn’t make this decision herself because she didn’t have her own house. She moved back into her parents’ home in Texas and she was sure her mom would not agree to have another dog.

However, Kelsey still kept looking at adoption sites on the off chance that her mom might change her mind and heart. Around Labor Day, the young woman learned that the Dallas Animal Shelter was having a sale.

For a weeklong deal, dogs that measured 12 inches long, or a foot, had a discounted adoption fee of $5 only at the shelter. Kelsey knew this was a deal she couldn’t pass up but she had to get creative about asking permission from her mom.

Mom Thought It’s a Sandwich!

So, she thought of sending her dear mother a text by simply asking her if she could get a $5 footlong. Her clueless mom was puzzled about the question. Why would her daughter ask permission for getting a Subway sandwich? Anyway, mom said yes and Kelsey was ecstatic.

It was too late before Kelsey’s mom realized her daughter conned her. The $5 footlong she brought home was named Bentley, a mixed breed with caramel coat and a sweet face.

But Kelsey’s mom did not have the energy to get mad at her daughter. Not only was Bentley an adorable dog, but Kelsey also struck a great deal with this adoption. Bentley came with a free collar, free meds and free check-up with the vet. They could also use a few coupons to buy pet food from the shelter.

Oliver Loves Bentley!

Kelsey’s other dog, Oliver, immediately warmed up to Bentley. They became fast friends, which only made Kelsey even more excited about having two pets. She’s already planning on going to the dog park with her pooches. But her mom said she’s going to punish Kelsey by never offering to walk Bentley for her. That’s fair enough, right?

Meanwhile, the clever 21-year-old’s story has gone viral on Twitter. What she has done has raised awareness on the perks of adopting a dog and giving them a forever home, as she told The Dodo. But some people have also been inspired to pull off the same clever trick if only more shelters would have the same footlong promo.

Adopting Dog from Shelters

Pet adoption fees vary per shelter or dog adoption agency. Some charge a minimal fee but others may require a fee that’s not more than $50. Hence, it’s always a good idea to look out for special events and announcements in your community, just like what Kelsey did. Many shelters usually take part in activities to facilitate and promote pet adoption.

If you cannot wait for the events, you can easily visit a shelter to look at the dogs for adoption. Or, look at their online site for a list and profile of the available pets. Spend time picking out a pet and ask questions from the shelter staff. If possible, take the dog you like for a walk just to see if you’re a good fit for each other.

Once you’ve decided on a dog, you will need to submit a few documents and sit down for an interview with the shelter staff.  A home inspection might also be necessary. Before you bring your dog home, make sure that your house is already pet proof and that you have the essentials like food, a dog bowl, some toys, and a pet bed.
